The Society was formed in 1985 and now has a great many active members. Many live beyond the Calderdale area, both in the UK and further afield in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and other countries.
The purpose of the Society is to encourage and support research into the history of families with roots in the area.
Calderdale is located in the foothills of the Pennines in West Yorkshire, England and covers 140 square miles with a current population of around 200,100. Our area of interest is shown in the image. Click on the image for a bigger version
The Society is run by an Executive Committee. The officers are elected at the Annual General Meeting and work on behalf of members by organising the monthly meetings and visits as well as assisting members with their research enquiries. There is more detail here
We meet on the 4th Thursday of each month when guest speakers present topics that are relevant to Family History research in the area. Currently we meet at the Maurice Jagger Centre, Lister Street, Winding Road, Halifax HX1 1UZ
The Society publishes a quarterly journal, the Scrivener that is free to members and is the major means of sharing news and information between our membership. The bulk of the content is provided by the members.
The society is active in transcribing and indexing original records through the work of volunteer members. This information is stored in a database which is available to members able to visit the research library. For people who cannot visit the research library, there is a search service. The results of these activities are published in various formats and are avalable for purchase.
The Society’s Research Library is in Brighouse Library and is open to Society members and the general public.
Calderdale Family History Society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies. The Society establishes contact with other organisations that have similar interests – ranging from the archives and Register Offices in Calderdale, to local history societies and other family history groups.
The society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies and the Yorkshire Group of Family History Societies
