Soyland, Ebenezer – Monumental Inscriptions

Last updated on March 14th, 2019 at 04:02 pm

We have been advised of 2 errors on a Monumental Inscription for the Halstead grave. “Hiram” was incorrectly shown as “Ivor” & Leah’s age was shown as 26 instead of 86. The correct entry should read :-

HIRAM HALSTEAD, died April 13th 1901. aged 72 years. Also LEAH HALSTEAD, who died March 9th 1916, aged 86 years.

Part of our Transcription Index, there are now 13,500 records from School Logs or Records.

School records can be an extremely rich source of information for genealogy research and add colour to the life of your ancestor with the details that they provide.

The top 10 surnames from the School logs are Akroyd, Clegg, Firth, Greenwood, Mitchell, Shaw, Smith, Sutcliffe, Taylor, Walker, Wilson which together account for just over 10% of the records. But with over 2000 different surnames in the logs, you’re likely to find a record of interest.

Halifax Guardian Births, Marriages & Deaths

Last updated on March 14th, 2019 at 04:02 pm

The Calderdale Reference Library have now completed their mammoth task of transcribing nearly 400,000 BMD notices from the Halifax Guardian newspaper, from 1832 to 1921.   These are now available on the Library website

In addition, they are now also on our Society’s Transcription Index, so any member who is logged on with their membership username can request a transcription, free of charge.   This will list all the names, and their relationships, one to another, of the people featuring in the newspaper notice.

This is a major new source of information for the 2nd half of the 19th century & the start of the 20th.

New transcriptions completed

Last updated on March 14th, 2019 at 04:02 pm

Our transcriptions team has been working hard and recently achieved a milestone by publishing the last of the parish church registers. With the completion of these transcriptions the team has transcribed all the available parish records in our Society’s area. This is a tremendous achievement only very slightly marred because we have not been able to get permission to work on the registers for from St Mary/Christ Church at Todmorden.
But the team is not resting on its laurels! They are now working on the Burial records for Stoney Royd Cemetery – the largest & current cemetery in Calderdale, along with smaller projects. They are also collaborating with Warley Community Association on transcribing the Burial Registers for Warley Town Cemetery.
