Halifax St John BMDs – Missing Data

The CDs & downloads for Halifax St John BMDs for 1813 to 1837 has recently been found to have a set of data missing.   Specifically, in the date sequence file only, baptisms from 1/7/1827 to 31/12/1827 are missing.    The files giving baptisms in name sequence are unaffected.

Anyone who has previously purchased a download of these files should already have had a replacement file sent to them.    Anyone who has previously purchased a CD & would like a correction file sent to them, should E-Mail projects@cfhsweb.co.uk & we will arrange for the corrected file to be E-Mailed to you.

Our thanks to Mr. David Greenwood for pointing this error out to us.

Shore Chapel records

I am aware that some of my husband’s relatives – named Woodall – were baptised/married/buried there but do not have precise dates.

And one other question: who was the namesake of the Dean Clough complex? The historical sources I’ve found say that the Crossley brothers leased what was already called the Dean Clough Mills in 1802

Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum seek WW1 photos

We at the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum in Caernarfon are starting the mammoth task of looking for photos of individual soldiers from the RWF who were killed in the Great War.


We are trying to put each man’s name on display on a screen on the centenary of his death and would dearly love to be able to add a photograph of each man to go with his name. It is a huge undertaking as there were over 10,400 men from the RWF that were killed. But even if we only get a fraction of the photographs we believe it is worth doing. Many of the RWF were from all over so we are asking please could you help?


You can help us by circulating our plea to anybody who is interested.


Many families have photographs tucked away so this might prompt them to seek them out. We accept scans or copies and any that appeared in newspapers, which often carried obituaries including photographs.


We need as much information as possible to go with the photo to make sure we fit the right photo to the right man – but sometimes a name and date of death might be all we need.

Halifax Guardian Birth Marriage and Death announcements added to Transcription Index

Another 80,000 records from the Halifax Guardian have been added to the on-line Transcription Index. Covering the period from 1874 to 1885, these records provide the surname and the event being announced and the date. The records also have first names which might, for births, be belong to a parent.

These additions bring the number of records on the index with more due to be added in the next few months.

Full Transcription Index launched

In the autumn of 2013, we implemented a full index of approximately one million names of people who appear on our transcribed publications. The index entry gives a summary of the event, and the full detail is available in the relevant publication. This is a unique and valuable tool to help you find easily whether or not we hold information about someone of interest to you.


The index covers Births Marriages and deaths from parish registers, census records from 1764 notices in the Halifax Guardian and much more

We have separate Yorkshire boards for the postings on Calderdale and over the last 10 years we have over 4 Million postings which are all searchable.
